History Of Rumah Jaireh

This home is open to all faiths and all races and was set up to cater to the following needs.
Persatuan Kebajikan Rumah Jaireh also known as Rumah Jaireh was established in 2005. The founder of Rumah Jaireh was late Mr. Subramaniam @ Francis Xavier and Dr. Lucy Campos. The home is run by a committe which consists of 7 members.
Rumah Jaireh is a special home caters for children with HIV and also it is a halfway home for unwed mothers and women with HIV who need temporary shelter or till they get a suitable alternative/home.
Presently, Rumah Jaireh has four children. We have Florina (19 years old) and Roslina (16 years old) siblings form Sarawak who came into this home at the age of four years old and one years old, respectively. These two are special needs girls (slow intellectually). Then, we have another girl Rebecca (16 years old) from Perak who was referred from another orphanage at age of 5 years old and a boy named Teddy (12 years old) who is a Guinean referred to us at the age of 4 years by the Jabatan Kebajikan Selangor.

A brief information about these children and the challenges we are currently facing described below:

The special children, Florina and Roslina, we were told that their parents died due to Aids and they were initially taken care by their grandparents who lack financially. These girls were brought to this home when their grandparents could not afford to take care of them. Roslina was in a very critical condition when she was brought to us. She was admitted in HKL for almost one month before getting back to normal condition. Both of them are doing well now, but their intellectual capabilities are rather low. We are trying to teach them some living skills so that they would be able to be independent and take care of their own basic daily needs in the future.
As for Rebecca, her father and mother have died due to aids and she was abandoned by their family. She is bright and capable to advance further into tertiary education. She does carry the responsibilites in assisting the home mothers in some daily routine in house cleaning works.
Teddy's is not only HIV positive, but also was diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy. His mother died due to an automobile accident and he was under the care of Jabatan Kebajikan Selangor. When he was brought to this home he had difficulties in walking and normally crawls.Teddy underwent an operation to rectify this muscular disorder by kind hearted doctors from HKL with no cost and now he is able walk but with some limitations. He is currently under special shoes (orthotics/prosthetics) and is continuously improving in his walking abilities.Teddy whoe is always vibrant and jovial is very intelligent and is a great joy to have him in this home.
All these children were homeschooled under a care of a dedicated teacher (teacher Anna) from Monday to Friday for the past 7 years using Alpha Omega Publication(AOP - American Curriculum). We decided on this approach as these children were rejected and not welcomed in the government school located at Batu Arang because they are HIV children.Presently, the AOP programme is not much recognized by the Malaysian Colleges and Universities and so we decided to change to another to another educational programme known as International Canadian Curriculum (ICC) which appears to be more conducive for these children when compared to other more popular educational programme such as UK IGCSE.
We are currently sending Rebecca who is now in Grade 8 and Teddy in Grade 6 to a school using ICC education programme at Kota Damansara located about 40 km away from Rumah Jaireh, Batu Arang. This Canadian School system is generally more focused on holistic education development rather than grades achievement. It comprises 70% course works and 30% exam base and these children would able to cope without much stress. With this, the children can finish their grade 12 and complete their diploma with an Ontario Canadian University Certification. We believe that Rebecca will be able to complete within four years whilst Teddy within 7 years for their diploma. As for Florina and Roslina, they will need skilled teachers to train them at home environment for their improvement in living skills and day to day selfcare.

1) For all HIV + women, with or without children, rendered homeless or rejected.

2) For HIV + children made homeless or rejected.

3) Sex workers and female drug addicts.

4) Female prisoners who on discharge, have no place to go.

5) Women and children with special needs who cannot be taken in by other homes or institutions, for some reason or another.

The home also serves as a halfway home till a suitable alternative/ home can be found e.g. for unwed mothers While the first 3 categories are quite explicit, we have come across several cases that are given the runaround by established homes and institutions. And these are categorized in (5) above.
